2025 Golden Apple Teacher of the Year winners

“How are we going to cultivate character today?”  This is what Kristen Canipe, a marketing teacher at Cave Spring High School, says is the heartbeat of her classroom.  Canipe, the 2025 Golden Apple Teacher of the Year, says “adolescence is a pivotal time, shaping the leaders of tomorrow,” and that she works to model respect, responsibility and safety in everything she does.

An inspiring sports broadcaster and author, Lauren returns to Roanoke to share her journey of resilience and hope to our community. Known for her work on ESPN since 2016, Lauren is celebrated not only for her sports coverage but for sharing the compelling stories behind the athletes, coaches, and fans who make sports more than just a game. 

Her Story: Triumph Through Tragedy

In 2003, while attending Rutgers University, Lauren’s life was forever changed when she lost both of her parents to a hidden battle with prescription drug addiction.  Despite her profound loss, Lauren transformed her grief into a source of strength. Her story, captured in her new book Shatterproof, is a powerful example of courage, authenticity, and healing.
